How much does it cost to run that pond de-icer?
Long Valley- Morris County NJ

Winter is here!  Well not officially but it sure feels like it and the white stuff has graced us with it's presence a few times already.

We have our ponds winterized and our fish are on their way to a long few months of hibernation.  This means we have our de-icers in our ponds, and you may have a de-icer that is an electric hog!

Although our calculation isn't perfect, it will certainly provide you with an estimated electrical cost to run your de-icer all winter.
1. Find the watts the de-icer uses.  You should be able to find this on the unit itself or a tag.
2. Take this watt number and divide it by 10.
3. The answer you get will be an estimated cost to run this de-icer each month.

For example:
1.  A 1200 watt de-icer will cost you approximately $120.00/month in electrical costs.
2. A 300 watt de-icer will cost you approximately $30.00/ month in electrical costs.

If your deicer is using more than 300 watts you should consider a new one. You don't need the extra "power" and it will pay for itself in one winter in electrical savings.
